Edward Yang was one of the key figures of the Taiwanese New Cinema, the modernist film movement that put Taiwan on the film map since the 1980s. Films from this movement often focus on a confused generation that is lost between tradition and modernity. In Yang's Taipei Story, Ah-Long stands for tradition. He lives in the past and values family values and friendship. His girlfriend Azhen, a westernized businesswoman, stands for modernity. Through their disintegrating relationship, Yang sketches an image of urban alienation. The film will be introduced by Gertjan Willems.
