Last summer, soprano Emma Posman, then still a student at the Ghent Conservatory, was queen for a night on the stage of the Salzburger Festspiele. For this new concert, she has focussed her skills on the French and German song repertoire. Together with Bert De Rycke, another alumnus of our classical music school, she has put together a noble programme. The late-Romantic colour palettes of Debussy and Fauré were shrouded in the night-time and in love. Refined melodies seek their way across surprising, but rarely brusque harmonic turns. Their German counterparts, in contrast, often set a darker tone in both lyrics and melody. Victor Ullman's gripping love songs speak of reserved complexity, with an occasional burst of energy. The atmosphere grows no lighter as Hugo Wolf reflects on 'unbekanntes Wehe'.
