29.10.19—20:00    MIRY ENSEMBLE: Werner Van Mechelen, Stefaan Degand & Desguin Kwartet MIRY Concertzaal concert

With armistice in mind, baritone Werner Van Mechelen and actor Stefaan Degand invoke smoke and mud from the trenches, together with pianist Florestan Bataillie and the young Desguin Quartet. They open with Berceuse Heroique, which a tremulous Debussy hoped would encourage the army of King Albert I, quoting the Brabançonne. Not less tremulous was Ivor Gurney when setting soldier Tom McCrae’s In Flanders to music. In Dover Beach, Samuel Barber recalled Matthew Arnold’s words on ‘the turbid ebb and flow of human misery’. There is more, from across the ocean, with Charles Ives’ Three Songs of War.
