Samah Hijawi has been living in Brussels for several years. Some time ago she discovered the sculpture by Eugene Simonis of Godefroid van Bouillon, on Place Royale in the centre of Brussels. She was amazed by the inscription on this sculpture: 'Godefroid van Bouillon - First King of Jerusalem'. Starting from this discovery, Hijawa initiated the project 'Chicken Scribbles and the Dove that Looks like a Frog'; an ongoing investigation into performance and collage, in which works of art that refer to the history of Palestine are taken as a starting point for thinking about the aesthetics and representation of power, about belonging, and the performativity of politics in art. How can Palestine be imagined from a distance and how do trauma and exile influence the narrative and representation of the homeland?
