Where is Rocky II? is the first film of French artist Pierre Bismuth. It deals with his ten year search for an unknown sculpture of Ed Rusha in the Mojave dessert, California. A sculpture that happens to be an exact copy of one of the dessert rocks. The story of this grotesque quest balances on fact and fiction and deals with such notions as the construction of reality, film and the arts. Bismuth’s work has contributed to what is called the ‘Cinematic Turn’, a movement in the arts which has put film into the museum and has stimulated artists to take up the camera. His involvement in film got him to win an Oscar for best scenario of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). Recently he has had solo exhibitions in Kunsthalle Wein, Vienna; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; British Film Institute, London; Villa Arson, Nice; Tramway, Glasgow and Witte de With, Rotterdam. He also took part in the 49th Venice Biennale; de 11th Lyon Biennale; Des choses en plus, des choses en moins, in the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Repetition Island, in Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Manifesta 4, in Frankfurt.
After the screening of Where is Rocky II? Pierre Bismuth will adress the audience.
