In his paintings, Michael Van den Abeele experiments with optical effects, texture and colours, as a result of which the form and meaning of the image, or 'what is depicted', constantly changes. Dinosaurs from a boys' book, the universe or abstract works alternate and question each other when they hang next to each other. They are a soundless, humorous discussion about the image, the creation of the image, of the painting or of the superficial symbol as a signifier.
