07.03.19—20:00    KASK lecture: Eli Cortiñas Campus Bijloke - Cirque lecture

In her work, Eli Cortiñas looks primarily to the past, and how history is written, re-written, re-enacted and re-composed. She questions the way history is interpreted and understood in today’s setting. Central to this question is the concept of cinematic memory; analysing and re-editing pre-existing footage and intertwining it with her own material. Her video loops and assemblages are mainly created with found footage and film scenes from classics of Buñuel and Truffaut as well as with newspaper materials and images from books from the 60’s and 70’s. They are analytically sharp and counteract gender stereotypical attributions, family conflicts or bourgeois advancement fantasies.

The Spanish born Cortiñas began her studies at the European Film College in Denmark and then continued her education at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM). She showed her work among other places in Museum Ludwig; Centre Pompidou; Kunsthalle Budapest; Museum Marta Herford; Moscow Museum of Modern Art; Kunstraum Innsbruck; Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, and MUSAC. She lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

On 8 February her solo show 'Always Bite the Hand That Feeds You' opens at Convent Artspace, Gent.
