28.03—29.03.20    Conservatory on Stage: Opera Serse - Händel MIRY Concertzaal

Brexit or not, from a cultural point of view, Europe has always been one large intercultural and multicultural area. Händel, the well-known ‘London’ composer, grew up in Saxony and Brandenburg, and flourished as a composer in Rome, Florence and Venice. His opera Serse tells a story that takes place in the Middle East, today Europe’s war zone, but once Europe’s cradle. The story is about King Serse and his military campaign that found its way into the history books. Händel’s version of the facts, based on texts by the Greek author Herodotus, was first performed in 1738. Despite his bloody origins, the composer found room for the necessary humor. Prepare yourself for an ironic libretto, full of sharp dialogues and hidden comedy, and a story that unfolds at lightning speed.
